The 9th International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Minerals Industry (SDIMI 2019) was held 27-29 May 2019 in Sydney, Australia. The aim of the conference was to provide a forum for the analysis of the mining industry's social licence to operate. Presenters included keynote speakers from Australia, Europe, Canada, USA, Africa and Asia. Case studies from throughout the mining world were presented, highlighting advances in the art and science of obtaining and maintaining the licence to operate through exploration, development, production and mine closure. Significantly, the conference provided the opportunity to hear and learn from many of the stakeholders associated with mining, to develop a new working paradigm that will become how we view social licence and sustainability for the next decade.
