Methods of obtaining social acceptance for mining activities
This research refers to the issue of social acceptance for mining activities. The term of Social License to Operate is not widespread in Poland, although the problem of gaining social acceptance for mining is well-known and frequently discussed. The occurring protests and opposition to plans for the construction of new mines, lead to the need of developing new methods and tools for gaining social acceptance. There is a growing demand for raw materials, especially metals, and therefore also for new mines. Although Poland has centuries-old mining traditions, gaining the community's consent for operation is becoming more and more difficult. Also, in Poland the reasons for the opposition to mining are slightly different than in other countries and require a different approach. One of the main problems is the lack of proper reclamation of former industrial areas in the past, which results in a negative perception of mining today. In addition, despite the fact that the locations of raw materials deposits have been known for decades, inadequate spatial economy is causing difficulties with extraction, because of conflicts with the inhabitants. The main goal of the research was to find new methods, that would allow to increase the level of social acceptance for mining operations, especially at the earliest possible stage of planning, as well as develop guidelines that would help to raise general awareness of mining activity. To find these methods, it was necessary to recognize the factors that influence the public opinion about mining in Poland. The factors helped to identify conflict areas, in which more focus from companies and government is required to gain public consent to mining. CITATION:Lacny, Z, 2019.
