Mine plans and mine models, with suggestions for, why, and how they may be combined
THE importance of plans of mines and all their workings has been long established beyond doubt in all mining countries, and become necessary and somewhat compulsory in the majority of them by varied conditions and mining regulations, and which insist also on some established scale, so many feet to the inch (not a definite fractional relation to the workings), and so as to be generally applicable and useful alike to miners, managers, inspectors, and, in fact, all mining individuals. These regulations usually and similarly provide for showing or projecting the mining properties and their exact limits in various sections, viz., four distinct plans :-1. Surface Plan.2. Longitudinal Vertical Sections, Underground.3. Horizontal4. Lateral TransverseOn extensive workings many lateral sections are absolutely necessary. Before these can be placed in the condensed form correct surveying under all the varied circumstances inseparable from mines must be made in and of all the workings and their relation to the meridian. However, when all this is complete and placed on the plans the truest of them is the surface plan in almost every case, and next the transverse sections of the workings. The other plans give to a certain extent false appearances of the workings, much more magnified in irregular mines or complex workings, or where the country is much faulted, or dykes interfere, or in the more common case where there are parallel or branching lodes or veins.
