Cast-iron brackets or chairs for centre-guide (or runner) supports in Kintore Shaft, Central Mine, Broken Hill; N.S.W.

KINTORE shaft is timbered with 10 x 10-in. oregon frame sets, 13 ft. 8 in. x 9 ft. 6 in. in the clear, placed horizontally and separated by upright studdles 6 ft. long. Two dividings, one 10 in. x 10 in., the other 10 in. x 8 in., form part of each set and making three compartments, the whole being closely lagged horizontally with 10-ft. x 2-in. planks outside the main timber. Two of these compartments are used for hauling or winding purposes, and are 9 ft. 6 in. x 3 ft. 8 in. in the clear. The other compartment is used for ladderway, pumps, pipes, &c., and is 9 ft. 6 in. x 4 ft. 10 in. Long bottom cages are used in the hauling compartment, which will hold two of the trucks generally used in the underground workings. There are six guides (or runners) in each hauling compartment, and these are of two distinct sizes, are fixed in different positions, and serve different purposes. The centre or larger guides, two in each compartment, serve to conduct the cage in the desired direction, and on them the U shoes of the cage work. They are of timber (oregon), 7i3, in. x 6 in. in section, and long enough to each from the centre of one end-piece or dividing to the centre of the third above or below, which would be 20 ft., except at the plats, where the guides vary slightly in length.
