Manufacture of pig iron and steel at Hoskin's iron and steel works, Lithgow, N.S.W.
1. INTRODUCTION. The scope of this report is necessarily limited, and consideration will therefore be restricted to the main processes in the conversion of iron ore to steel ingots ready for the soaking pits. The subject naturally falls into two sections, dealing respectively with the production of pig iron and of steel. These will be dealt with under the following heads :-1. INTRODUCTION. 2 MANUFACTURE OF IRON. (a) GENERAL OPERATION. (b) CONSTRUCTION OF BLAST FURNACES AND ACCESSORIES. (C) LAYOUT OF PLANT. (d) DETAILED OPERATION. (e) RAW MATERIALS (f) COKING PRACTICE. (g) PRODUCTS. (h) ECONOMIC FACTORS. 3. MANUFACTURE OF STEEL. (a) GENERAL OPERATION. (b) CONSTRUCTION OF OPEN HEARTH FURNACES. (C) LAYOUT OF PLANT. (d) DETAILED OPERATION. (e) RAW MATERIALS (f) PRODUCERS. (g) PRODUCTS. (h) ECONOMIC FACTORS. 4. CONCLUSION. All sketches illustrating this report are drawn from sketches and measurements taken by the writer.
