Optimising transverse stoping at the Musselwhite Mine
Musselwhite Mine, owned and operated by Newmont Corporation, is located on the traditional territory of North Caribou Lake First Nation in the Kenora District approximately 500 km north of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It has been in continuous production since 1997. The Musselwhite Mine has expanded its underground operations several times since commencing production, and mining activities are currently at a depth of approximately 1.5 km below surface. There are six active mining zones at Musselwhite, of which the PQ Deeps (PQD) is the deepest mining area representing the majority of Ore Reserves and is extracted primarily via transverse longhole stoping. Development at the PQD started in late 2017, and the first stopes were mined in early 2021. This paper highlights mine design updates, optimisation of drill and blast practices and ground control applications for transverse open stoping at the PQD based on the geotechnical and mining lessons learnt from previous stoping practices at the Musselwhite Mine.
