BHP’s Prominent Hill Operations in South Australia is undergoing a major mine expansion project. The scope includes the construction of orepasses, a gyratory crusher, a loading station, a hoisting shaft, an overland conveyor system, and a ventilation upgrade. In Australia, the use of hoisting shafts for materials handling has been relatively limited compared to regions with developed underground hard rock mining industries. Shaft sinking projects have been carried out sporadically over recent decades, often drawing expertise from areas where shaft sinking is more common. Nevertheless, several large-capacity hoisting shafts have been successfully constructed in Australia and continue to operate today. Mine shafts remain a highly effective method of materials handling, particularly as an option for electrified material haulage. This paper presents a case study on the application of the strip-and-line method for sinking a 7.55 m diameter, 1326 m deep, concrete-lined hoisting shaft. Constructed by Byrnecut Australia Pty Ltd, this shaft is pivotal in increasing underground production to 6.5 Mt/a by establishing a materials handling and hoisting system. The project leveraged prior shaft sinking experience to incorporate key improvements in shaft sinking arrangements, stage design, and shaft sink mining practices. Many of these enhancements have resulted in notable safety and productivity improvements, offering a credible path forward for similar projects. The paper discusses the design, planning, and execution of the main shaft sinking, highlighting improvements to existing practices, the use of innovative stage designs, and the successes and challenges encountered during the project.
