This award was created in 1987 in honour of GB O’Malley, a long standing AusIMM member dedicated to the development of resources sector education.

It is considered the highest student award and is awarded annually to a Student Member of The AusIMM. The award recognises the best peer-reviewed paper prepared by one or more students as lead authors and presented at a conference or a publication of note.

In 2019, the G.B. O’Malley Medal was awarded to Frances Blake, SAusIMM.
