Course overview
As a site leader, the ability to understand, apply and influence the development of the management operating system (MOS) is critical for the execution, monitoring, and management of business performance of a site’s operations.
From driving productivity and safety to having the knowledge to hold planning priorities accountable, understanding how to guide and implement your site’s MOS is key for both the success of your operation, and the growth of your career.
With a focus on practical skills that can be applied directly to your work, this 5-week short course is designed to give you the expertise and insights to drive key decisions that ultimately impact the mine value chain and life of mine plan. This includes enhancing and leveraging operational reports and cost estimations, translating strategic plans into implementation plans, and generating practical plans for applying your learnings to your own site.
This course is designed to support aspiring and established site leaders with the insights, skills and knowledge essential for running successful site operations.

Learning objectives

Describe how MOS can be used in the successful operation of a mine.

Examine the Life of Mine Plan, its processes and discuss some of the key principles and decisions made during this development.

Course structure
The five-week course is a collaborative, hands-on online learning experience, taking learners approximately 20 hours to complete.
Course content includes:
- A 'Meet the Experts' interactive virtual classroom session
- Informative videos
- Additional resources and readings (case studies, articles)
- Selective examples of tools used
- Group discussion forums
- Learning activities in the form of short quizzes
Please note, attendance at the live session is not mandatory; the virtual classroom session will be recorded and available on the same day for participants who are unable to attend live.

Module 1
Management Operating System (MOS)
1. Describe the role of MOS in delivering strategy.
2. List the key components of a MOS.
3. Identify the critical success factors of successful mine asset management systems.
4. Recognise the opportunities of emerging MOS technologies.
5. Construct a personal plan of action to identify opportunities for MOS enhancement
Module 2
Life of Mine Planning (LOMP)
1. Describe the principles of life-of-mine planning and the mine planning process.
2. List the general inclusions of a LOM Plan.
3. Compare open pit and underground mine scheduling and how they link to business outcomes.
4. Model the effect of the supply chain fluctuations on business outcomes.
5. Construct a personal plan of action to identify opportunities to improve mine planning in your workplace.
Module 3
Mine Operations Reporting
1. Identify the key elements of an effective operations reporting system.
2. Examine the reports required to understand mine performance.
3. Describe techniques that maximise the interpretation and usefulness of mine operations reports.
4. Identify the minimum reports required for industry governance and compliance.
5. Construct a personal plan of action that will improve reporting effectiveness in your area of operations.
Module 4
Mine Accounting
1. List the key elements of mine accounting
2. Assess mine accounting principles and systems.
3. Describe the main risk generating factors that influence the quality of resource estimates.
4. Examine mine valuation techniques.
5. Construct a personal plan of action that will improve estimates in your area of operations.

Joanna Krzyzanowska

Her technical and operational background makes her incredibly qualified to project manage innovative mine solutions in both site based and in consultative roles.
She has leveraged these skills into project management and leadership roles with a focus on adding value, ensuring safe sustainable cash flow and growth through technical influence and strong relationships.
Chris Carr
BE (Mining), MBA (Tech Mgt), MSc (Min Eco), FAusIMM(CP), FIEAust, GAICD, RPEQ
Chris previously served as AusIMM Director from 2007-12, and as chair of the Board of Professional Engineers Qld 2013-14. He has contributed to AusIMM’s financial stability via his involvement on the Investment Committee as Chair since 2007, and professional standards through membership of the Chartered Professional (CP) Board from 2009-17 (including Chair 2012-15, Project Manager for the CP program in 2017 and on the Advisory Taskforce). He has also served on various other conference committees, the 2015 EEF Field Trip, the Mining Society and NW Qld Branch Committee.
Chris is passionate about professional development and standards, the future of the industry, and is an active supporter of students and new professionals. Chris is excited about the future of mining and AusIMM’s changing role as the world moves further into the technology age and electrification, and enjoys the opportunity to give more back through the AusIMM Board.
Jo-Anne Dudley
Jo-Anne is also a non-executive director for Perth-based gold miner Ora Banda Mining Pty Ltd.
Jo is a Fellow member of the AusIMM and was selected as the 2018 Exceptional Woman in Queensland Resources, and was also honoured to be named as one of the 2018 Global 100 Inspirational Women in Mining. In 2019 Jo-Anne was sponsored by Chief Executive women to attend the Wharton Business School Executive Leadership programme.
