Frequently asked questions
What are the technical requirements to participate in the course? i.e. do I need a webcam, microphone, etc?
The course will be run entirely online via a cloud-based Learning Management System (LMS) which can be accessed via computer, tablet or phone. Participants will simply need to have a working Internet connection and a computer, tablet or phone with sound to access the course. Please note that some course videos and the virtual classroom recording are hosted on Vimeo. Participants in regions where Vimeo is blocked may need to use a VPN to access these materials.
How long will the course take?
The full course is estimated to take about 20 hours of learning. Participants will have access to the course platform for five weeks to complete all modules.
How often will the courses be run?
We aim to run two intakes each year.
Do I have to attend the live sessions?
No, all virtual classrooms are recorded and made available on the learning platform for participants who are unable to attend the live session.
Will the course be delivered in other languages?
At the moment, no, but we will be looking at delivering the course in other languages in the near future.
How many PD hours do I receive for undertaking the course?
Participants can earn professional development (PD) hours for undertaking the course. One contact hour of technical content is equivalent to one PD hour.
Is "The Mining System" online course suitable if I’m not a mining engineer?
Yes. The Mining System course is specifically designed for both technical and non‑technical professionals who need to understand how mining operations work as an integrated system. It is particularly valuable for people working in planning, finance, ESG, commercial, corporate, or support roles who interact with mining operations but may not have formal technical training. The course focuses on how the system fits together, rather than on discipline‑specific technical detail.
How is this course different from other mining courses?
Unlike introductory mining courses that focus on definitions or high‑level concepts, The Mining System takes a systems and performance lens. It connects the Management Operating System (MOS), life‑of‑mine planning, operational reporting, and mine accounting to show how decisions in one area affect performance across the entire mine value chain. The emphasis is on decision‑making, trade‑offs, and operational alignment, not just terminology.
Will this course help me move into mine management or site leadership roles?
Yes. The course is well suited to supervisors, superintendents, engineers, and emerging leaders who want to progress toward mine management or senior operational roles. It builds the system‑level understanding required to influence site performance, interpret operational data, and engage more effectively with planning, finance, and leadership teams.
Is this course relevant for corporate, head office, or consulting roles?
Absolutely. The course is particularly valuable for corporate, consulting, and head‑office professionals who support mining operations but may not have firsthand site experience. By understanding how operational systems interact, participants can improve communication with site teams, make more informed recommendations, and reduce misalignment between strategy and execution.
How technical is the content?
The course is conceptually rigorous but not mathematically or technically heavy. It explains key mining systems, reports, and accounting concepts in plain language, focusing on interpretation and decision‑making rather than calculations or engineering design. This makes it accessible to a broad audience while still being highly relevant to experienced practitioners.
Does the course focus on a specific mining method or commodity?
No. The principles explored in The Mining System course apply across surface and underground operations and across different commodities. This makes the course suitable for professionals working in diverse mining contexts or across multiple sites and jurisdictions.
How much time do I realistically need to commit each week?
The course is designed to be manageable alongside full‑time work. Participants should expect to spend approximately 4–5 hours per week engaging with course materials, including videos, readings, reflection activities, and the knowledge check.
How does this course benefit organisations enrolling teams?
For organisations, The Mining System course helps to accelerate onboarding of new staff and contractors; improve cross‑functional understanding between technical and non‑technical teams; reduce miscommunication and siloed decision‑making and build a shared language around performance, reporting, and planning.
