This online self-paced course provides an overview of the resources sector in Australia, from exploration to planning, development, extraction and production. Aspects of mine closure, rehabilitation and regeneration are also covered.

Module 1 - Welcome to the Resources Sector

The Resources sector in Australia. Its role and economic contribution. Introduction to key mining stakeholders, key states as well as top and emerging commodities. The Mining Lifecycle. The Future of Mining in Australia including growing sustainably and emerging technologies. Your Career in Mining, growth opportunities.

Module 2 - Forming and Finding Deposits

Forming Mineral Deposits including types of deposits and how they are formed. Exploration Methods including how new technologies have made improvements in exploration. Estimation and Reporting including an introduction to the JORC and VALMIN codes.

Module 3 - Mine Design and Planning

Before opening a mine: what has to happen. Environment /social impact assessment. Social license to operate including working with local communities and traditional owners, best practices. Planning to build a mine. What is involved in mine planning including Life of Mine. Sustainable Mining, review the innovations in mining, equipment and infrastructure.

Module 4 - From Process to Product

Minerals in our Everyday Life Mining Methods, steps in mining and introduction to surface and underground mining methods. Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy.

Module 5 - Keeping Safe

Risk Management, dispel the myths around dangers of mining and on shared responsibility around keeping safe. Keeping Safe, identification of risks, mining safety legislation and environmental safety. Module 2 - Understanding Your Bias to Consciously Improve Workplace Inclusion

Explain inclusive action in the workplace. Define bias. Examine the impact of unfavourable bias on individuals and the organisation. Uncover the reasons why biases occur. Actively build awareness of your unconscious bias. Identify and commit to ways to reduce unfavourable bias and enable positive change.

Frequently asked questions

The course will be run entirely online via a cloud-based Learning Management System (LMS) which can be accessed via computer, tablet or phone. Participants will simply need to have a working Internet connection and a computer, tablet or phone with sound to access the course.

90 minutes total. Breaking the Surface is estimated to take about 1 hour to complete, while the Introduction to Diversity and Inclusion is estimated to take 30 minutes. Participants will have access to the course for six months after they first log in.

This is a self-paced course available year-round.

At the moment, no, but we will be looking at delivering the course in other languages in the near future.
