Dear members, we hope your year has started well. In 2023 we continue to see just how critical the resources sector is.

In Australia, demand for materials for new and energy-efficient technologies is underpinning our economy, with resources export forecasts set to reach new highs. Everybody working in mining has an important role to play in the once-in-a-generation opportunities we are seeing.

Alongside the growth and optimism across our industry, there is plenty for AusIMM members to look forward to this year as we celebrate our 130th anniversary and deliver an expanded program of professional development to share best practice with our global community.

Upskilling more people through online courses

Through our digital platforms we are connecting with professionals from all backgrounds who are looking to increase their knowledge. This week we launched our first online courses for 2023, covering JORC, advanced rock mechanics and mine manager skills, with more on the way. We work closely with experts to produce high-quality courses with real-world learnings that can be applied directly to people’s roles. Please view the upcoming calendar to see what’s on offer and make the most of special member pricing across all courses.

Celebrating achievements and driving change this International Women’s Day

From 3-10 March AusIMM will be presenting the fifth year of our successful International Women’s Day Event Series, bringing together more than 2,000 people across Australia to celebrate women’s achievements in mining. This year, we are expanding the Series to offer new immersive Diversity and Inclusion workshops in Perth and Brisbane. Hosted before our celebratory luncheons, these workshops have been developed following feedback to provide practical tools for organisations and individuals to create a more inclusive sector.

Bigger conferences providing more opportunities to learn and share

In 2023, AusIMM has revamped our conference program to offer larger, multi-stream events that will bring more people together to address the critical topics shaping our sector. Our calendar kicks off in late March with Underground Operators Conference in Brisbane, where 1000+ delegates will come together to discuss breakthroughs in underground mining.

In May we’re hosting the brand new Mineral Resource Estimation Conference in Perth to showcase our region’s excellence in estimation and hear from world-leading practitioners. And in November our new Critical Minerals Conference will address the rapid growth in clean energy technologies. Please view the full conference calendar to see our year ahead and get involved as a delegate, speaker, sponsor or exhibitor.

Showcasing local expertise

At a local level, our Community of Interest (COI) events are the perfect way to fit in regular, easily accessible professional development and networking. With 46 COIs around the country and covering all the major mining disciplines, we encourage members to look at the upcoming community events calendar and attend a technical talk at your local branch or join a society webinar. Our committees do a great job in creating a variety of interesting, relevant content to help connect and upskill our members.

Growing our global reach

AusIMM plays a vital role in representing our members and sharing their knowledge and expertise with the world. We are excited to have our first exhibition booth at the PDAC convention in Canada this March, where we are looking forward to connecting with our North American community. In June we will host the Australian Mining Leaders Forum in London and sponsor the 26th World Mining Congress in Brisbane. Through these international events, AusIMM connects with our global mining community, grows our influence, and showcases the work of Australasian resources professionals.

As we commemorate our 130th year, we are committed to providing value to all our members through our extensive range of professional development. We wish you all the best for the year ahead, and hope to see you at an upcoming event.

Kind regards

Nicole Brook FAusIMM, President and Stephen Durkin FAusIMM, CEO
